About this tool

What is the Final Grade Calculator?

With the exam a few days away, the useful question is not your current grade but the score you need. Enter your grade so far, how much the final is worth and the course grade you are aiming for, and the Final Grade Calculator gives the exact percentage you need on the exam, plus a table of the score required for every letter grade.

Two other modes cover the rest. "What if I score X?" runs the sum the other way and shows the course grade a particular exam score would produce. "Weighted categories" starts from the syllabus: list homework, quizzes, the midterm and the final with their weights and your scores, and the calculator works out your current average and the final score you need, even if some categories are not graded yet.

Letter-grade cut-offs are editable, with one-click presets for a plain A to D scale and a plus/minus scale, so the table matches your course.

  • Required final exam score for a target grade
  • What-if mode: course grade from a given final score
  • Weighted category mode with ungraded categories
  • Score needed for every letter grade, with editable cut-offs
  • Formula and working shown for each result
  • Copy and shareable link; runs in your browser

How to use the Final Grade Calculator

  1. Choose a mode: what you need on the final, what a given final score gives you, or weighted categories.
  2. Enter your current grade and the final's weight as percentages, then your target grade or a possible final score.
  3. In category mode, list each category with its weight and score, leave ungraded ones blank, and pick which row is the final. Weights must add up to 100.
  4. Adjust the letter-grade cut-offs if your course uses different ones.
  5. Read the required score and the outlook for each letter grade, then copy or share the result.

Worked examples

What do I need for a B?

Input

Current 88%, final worth 25%, target 85%

Output

You need 76.00% on the final; scoring 100% would give 91%, scoring 0% would give 66%

(85 - 88 x 0.75) / 0.25 = 76. The table also shows 96% is needed for a 90 (A) and 56% for an 80.

What if the final goes badly?

Input

Current 80%, final worth 40%, final score 50%

Output

Course grade 68.00% (D on a 90/80/70/60 scale)

80 x 0.6 + 50 x 0.4 = 48 + 20 = 68. A heavily weighted final can move a grade by a full letter in either direction.

From a syllabus with categories

Input

Homework 20% at 95, quizzes 20% at 85, midterm 25% at 78, final 35%; target 85%

Output

Current average 85.38% on 65% of the grade; need 84.29% on the final

Banked points are 19 + 17 + 19.5 = 55.5 of 65. Reaching 85 needs 85 - 55.5 = 29.5 more points from a 35-point final, which is 29.5 / 0.35 = 84.29%.

Background and insight

The formula is a weighted average solved for the unknown. If the final is worth w of the course and the rest of the work is worth 1 - w, then course grade = current x (1 - w) + final x w. Rearranging for the final gives required = (target - current x (1 - w)) / w. With 88% now, a final worth 25% and a target of 85%, that is (85 - 88 x 0.75) / 0.25 = 76%.

The single-number modes assume your current grade already reflects everything except the final, weighted the way the syllabus says, which is what most online gradebooks show. If your gradebook shows only points, or some categories are still empty, the category mode is more accurate. It averages the graded categories by their weights, assumes any still-ungraded category ends at your current average, and solves for the final.

Results above 100% mean the target cannot be reached without extra credit; results below zero mean the grade is already secure. Both are shown as they are rather than clipped, so you can see how far out of reach or how safe a grade is.

Common use cases

  • Planning revision time

See which course needs a strong final and which is already safe, and split study time accordingly.

  • Keeping a scholarship or prerequisite

Find the exam score that keeps a course above a required B or C.

  • Deciding whether to drop a course

If the score needed for a passing grade is above 100%, it may be time to talk to the instructor or adviser.

  • Teachers answering student questions

Show students exactly what their final has to be, with the working on screen.

Tips and limitations

  • Use the weight from the syllabus, not the share of points remaining, unless the course is graded purely on total points.
  • If the class drops the lowest quiz or curves the final, apply that before entering scores.
  • Some instructors round 89.5 up to 90; the table uses the cut-offs exactly as entered, so lower a cut-off by half a point if your course rounds.
  • For a whole term across courses, use the GPA Calculator once the course grades are in.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?

Required score = (target grade - current grade x (1 - final weight)) / final weight, with the weight as a decimal. At 88% with a 25% final, a target of 85% needs (85 - 66) / 0.25 = 76%.

How much will my final exam affect my grade?

Your grade can move by up to the final's weight times the gap between your current grade and your exam score. With a 25% final, scoring 20 points below your current average lowers the course grade by 5 points.

What if the score I need is over 100%?

Then the target cannot be reached by the final alone. Extra credit, a curve or a dropped score might change that, so ask your instructor, or aim for the next grade down, which the table shows.

How do I calculate my grade with weighted categories?

Multiply each category score by its weight, add them up, and divide by the total weight of the categories that have been graded. Homework 95 at 20%, quizzes 85 at 20% and a midterm of 78 at 25% give 5,550 / 65 = 85.38%.

What grade will I get if I score 70 on the final?

Use the "What if I score X?" mode. The course grade is current x (1 - weight) + 70 x weight, so with 85% now and a 30% final it is 59.5 + 21 = 80.5%.

Is my current grade the same as my grade before the final?

Usually yes: gradebooks typically show the weighted average of everything graded so far. If yours shows a running total of points instead, use the category mode with your actual scores.

Is there an in-depth guide to the Final Grade Calculator?
