About this toolWhat is the Shoe Size Converter?
Buying shoes from another country means translating sizes, and the systems do not line up neatly. The Shoe Size Converter takes a size in any common system, US, UK, EU, Japan or Mondopoint, or simply your foot length in centimetres or inches, and shows the equivalent in all the others for men's, women's or kids' sizing.
Every conversion goes through foot length, which is the one thing all the systems are built on. A men's US 10 corresponds to a foot of about 27.1 cm, which is UK 9, EU 42.5 and Japan 27. A full chart in 5 mm steps sits below the result with your row highlighted, so you can see the sizes either side.
Treat the answer as a starting point. Each brand builds its shoes on its own lasts, so the same printed size can fit half a size or more differently from one brand or model to the next. Measuring your foot and checking the brand's own chart is still the surest route.

Worked examples
Men's US 10 abroad
Input
Men's, US 10
Output
UK 9, EU 42.5 (exact 42.6), Japan 27 cm, foot 27.1 cm
Many European brands do not make half sizes, so you would try EU 42 and 43. The exact EU figure, 42.6, suggests 43 is the safer first try.
Women's EU 39
Input
Women's, EU 39
Output
US 8, UK 6, Japan 24.5 cm, foot 24.7 cm
EU 39 corresponds to about a 24.7 cm foot. A brand using the men's + 1.5 convention may call this a women's US 8.5.
From a measured foot
Input
Women's, foot length 25 cm
Output
US 8.5, UK 6.5, EU 39.5, Japan 25, Mondopoint 250
Starting from length avoids compounding two rounded conversions. Japan and Mondopoint sizes are simply the foot length.
A child's foot
Input
Kids, foot length 18 cm
Output
US 11.5 kids, UK 11.5 kids, EU 29
Leave about 1 to 1.5 cm of growing room in front of the toes for children; many parents go up half a size.
Background and insight
The UK and US systems count in barleycorns, an old unit of one third of an inch, so each full size is 8.47 mm. The EU system counts in Paris points of two thirds of a centimetre, so each EU size is 6.67 mm. Japan and the international Mondopoint system (ISO 9407) skip the arithmetic and use the foot length itself, in centimetres or millimetres. Because the steps differ, half sizes in one system never land exactly on sizes in another, which is why every chart rounds.
This converter uses the relationships published in ISO/TS 19407, the ISO technical specification for converting between sizing systems, together with the traditional barleycorn formulas: EU = 1.5 x foot length in cm + 2; UK adult = 3 x foot length in inches - 23; US men's = UK + 1; US women's = UK + 2. For children, UK = 3 x foot length in inches - 10 and US = 3 x foot length - 9.75, and both roll over to the adult or youth scale after size 13.5. The constants include the usual allowance between the foot and the slightly longer shoe last.
US women's sizing has more than one convention. The one used here (women's = men's + 1) matches the ISO table; many sports brands use men's + 1.5, so a women's 8.5 might be a men's 7 in one catalogue and a men's 7.5 in another. When a brand prints its own chart, follow that.

Tips and limitations
- Brands and even individual models differ. Use the result as a first guess and check the maker's own size chart.
- Measure in the evening, standing, with the socks you will wear; feet swell during the day.
- If your feet are different lengths, size to the longer foot.
- Running and hiking shoes are often bought a half size up to leave room for swelling and downhill toe movement.
- Width matters as much as length. This converter covers length only; look for brand width fittings (for example D, 2E or wide).
Frequently asked questions
What is a US size 9 in UK and EU sizes?
For men, US 9 is UK 8 and about EU 41.5 to 42 (a foot of roughly 26.2 cm). For women, US 9 is UK 7 and about EU 40. Brands round differently, so check their chart.
How do I convert EU shoe size to US?
Work out the foot length first: foot (cm) = (EU - 2) / 1.5. Then US men's = 3 x foot in inches - 22, and women's is one size higher. EU 42 gives a foot of 26.7 cm, which is about US men's 9.5 and women's 10.5.
What is the difference between men's and women's shoe sizes?
For the same foot, US women's sizes are about one to one and a half sizes larger than US men's; a men's 8 is roughly a women's 9 to 9.5. UK and EU sizes use the same numbers for men and women.
How are Japanese shoe sizes measured?
Japanese sizes are the foot length in centimetres, in half-centimetre steps, so a 26.5 fits a 26.5 cm foot. Some charts add a width letter from the JIS standard.
What is Mondopoint?
Mondopoint, defined in ISO 9407, sizes shoes by foot length in millimetres, sometimes followed by foot width, such as 270/100. It is used for ski boots, military footwear and many safety boots.
Why does my shoe size differ between brands?
Each manufacturer designs its own lasts, the foot-shaped forms shoes are built on, and decides how much room to leave. Size labels are also rounded from different conversion tables. A half size difference between brands is normal.
How should I measure my foot for shoe size?
Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, mark the tip of your longest toe and measure from the wall to the mark. Do it for both feet in the evening and use the longer measurement.
