About this toolWhat is the Grass Seed and Sod Calculator?
Grass seed rates vary by a factor of more than ten between species. Kentucky bluegrass seed is tiny and goes down at 1 to 3 pounds per 1,000 square feet, while tall fescue and perennial ryegrass, with much bigger seeds, need 7 to 9 pounds for the same area. Using the wrong rate gives either a thin lawn full of weeds or a crowded one that thins itself out. This grass seed calculator starts from the species, fills in a typical new-lawn rate, and turns your lawn area into pounds or kilograms and bags.
For overseeding an existing lawn it halves the rate, which is the usual guidance. Switch to sod and the same area becomes pieces and pallets for the slab or roll size your farm sells, with an allowance for cuts along beds and curves.
Prices per bag, pallet or piece give a quick comparison between seeding and sodding the same lawn. The calculation runs in your browser and works in square feet and pounds or square metres, grams and kilograms.

How to use the Grass Seed and Sod Calculator
- Choose imperial (square feet, pounds) or metric (square metres, kilograms).
- Pick grass seed or sod, then enter the lawn as length and width or as a known area. Leave out beds, patios and paths.
- For seed, choose the grass type and whether it is a new lawn or overseeding; edit the rate to match your seed label.
- For sod, choose the piece size, enter what one pallet covers and the extra for cuts.
- Read the amount to buy and add prices to compare seeding with sodding.
Worked examples
New tall fescue lawn, 50 x 40 ft
Input
2,000 ft², tall fescue, new lawn, 8 lb per 1,000 ft², 20 lb bags
Output
16 lb of seed, one 20 lb bag
The area is 2 x 1,000 ft², so 2 x 8 = 16 lb. Overseeding the same lawn would take 8 lb.
Overseeding bluegrass
Input
5,000 ft², Kentucky bluegrass, overseeding at half of 2 lb
Output
5 lb of seed
Bluegrass seed is small, so even a large lawn needs only a few pounds. Rates above 3 lb rarely help.
Sod for 1,000 ft²
Input
16 x 24 in slabs, 450 ft² per pallet, 5% extra
Output
394 pieces, 2.33 pallets
1,050 ft² / 2.67 ft² per slab = 394 pieces. Most farms sell part pallets, otherwise order three.
Background and insight
The default rates are typical figures from university extension services. UMass Extension, for example, lists 7 to 9 pounds per 1,000 square feet for tall fescue and perennial ryegrass and 1 to 2 for Kentucky bluegrass; warm-season grasses such as hulled bermudagrass and zoysiagrass are usually seeded at 1 to 2 pounds, and centipedegrass at well under a pound. Rates differ between sources and between seed lots, so the rate printed on your seed bag always wins, and the field is editable.
Seed rates are quoted per 1,000 square feet in the US and in grams per square metre elsewhere. One pound per 1,000 square feet equals 4.88 grams per square metre, so a tall fescue rate of 8 pounds is about 39 g/m². Mixes of several species are sown at a rate between their components, and the bag label gives it.
Sod is sold in slabs, most often 16 by 24 inches (2.67 square feet) or 18 by 24 inches, or in rolls. A pallet typically covers 400 to 500 square feet, but farms differ, so the pallet coverage is an input. Order a little extra: cuts around beds, curves and sprinkler heads waste 5 to 10 percent.
Common use cases
New lawns
Seed bare soil after grading at the full rate for the species you chose.
Overseeding thin turf
Thicken an existing cool-season lawn in early autumn at half the new-lawn rate.
Sod installs
Order the right number of pallets so the sod is laid the day it arrives.
Seed versus sod budget
Compare a bag of seed with pallets of sod for the same lawn before deciding.
Tips and limitations
- Sow cool-season grasses in late summer or early autumn and warm-season grasses in late spring, when soil is warm.
- Split the seed in two and spread half in each direction for even coverage.
- More seed is not better. Over-seeding crowds seedlings, which then compete and thin out.
- Lay sod within a day of delivery, stagger the joints like brickwork and water it deeply.
- Measure curved lawns as several rectangles and add them, or use a square footage calculator first.
Frequently asked questions
How much grass seed do I need per 1,000 square feet?
It depends on the species. Typical new-lawn rates are 7 to 9 lb for tall fescue and perennial ryegrass, 1 to 3 lb for Kentucky bluegrass, and 1 to 2 lb for hulled bermudagrass and zoysiagrass. Follow the rate on your seed label.
How much seed do I use for overseeding?
About half the new-lawn rate. For tall fescue that is roughly 4 lb per 1,000 square feet, and for Kentucky bluegrass about 1 lb.
How many square feet does a pallet of sod cover?
Usually 400 to 500 square feet, depending on the farm and the slab size. A pallet of 16 x 24 inch slabs covering 450 square feet holds about 168 pieces. Ask your supplier and enter their figure.
How many pallets of sod do I need for 2,000 square feet?
With 5% extra for cuts you need 2,100 square feet, which is about 4.7 pallets at 450 square feet each, so order five. The calculator does this for any pallet size.
Is it cheaper to seed or sod a lawn?
Seed is far cheaper in materials, often a tenth of the cost of sod, but takes weeks to establish and needs steady watering. Sod gives a usable lawn in a few weeks. Enter local prices in the calculator to compare.
How do I convert pounds per 1,000 square feet to grams per square metre?
Multiply by 4.88. So 8 lb per 1,000 ft² is about 39 g/m², and 2 lb is about 10 g/m².
