HEIC to JPG Converter

Convert iPhone HEIC and HEIF photos to JPG or PNG with a quality slider, batch upload and one ZIP download. Decoding runs on your device; nothing is uploaded.

The interactive tool loads here when JavaScript runs.

About this tool

What is the HEIC to JPG Converter?

The HEIC to JPG Converter turns photos from an iPhone or iPad, saved as .heic or .heif, into ordinary JPG files that open on Windows, Android, older software and every website upload form. Drop in one photo or a whole folder, pick JPG or PNG, and download each result or all of them in a single ZIP.

Decoding is done by libheif, the open-source HEIF library, compiled to JavaScript and run inside your browser tab. The decoder is about 1.3 MB and loads the first time you convert; after that, your photos are read, decoded and re-encoded on your own machine without being sent anywhere.

JPG output has a quality slider from 50% to 100%. PNG output is lossless, which keeps every decoded pixel but makes files several times larger than the HEIC you started with.

  • HEIC and HEIF to JPG or PNG
  • JPG quality slider from 50% to 100%
  • Batch conversion with one ZIP download
  • Every top-level image in multi-image files is exported
  • Clear error messages for files the decoder cannot read
  • Runs in your browser; photos are never uploaded

How to use the HEIC to JPG Converter

  1. Choose JPG or PNG under Format. For JPG, set the quality; 90% is a good default.
  2. Drop .heic or .heif files onto the upload area, or click Choose HEIC Files. You can select many at once.
  3. Wait while each file is decoded. The first conversion also downloads the decoder.
  4. Check the result cards for the pixel size and file size of each photo.
  5. Click Download on a card, or Download All as ZIP to save every converted photo in one archive.

Worked examples

A single iPhone photo

Input

IMG_4521.HEIC, JPG at 90%

Output

IMG_4521.jpg with the same width and height

Only the extension changes. The JPG is usually larger than the HEIC, because JPEG needs more bytes than HEVC for the same visual quality.

A file with several images

Input

sequence.heic holding three top-level images

Output

sequence-1.jpg, sequence-2.jpg, sequence-3.jpg

Each image becomes its own file, and the card says which image of the file it came from.

Background and insight

HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format, ISO/IEC 23008-12) is a container from the MPEG group. HEIC is the common name for HEIF files whose pictures are compressed with HEVC, the H.265 video codec. Apple made it the default camera format in iOS 11 in 2017, because an HEVC-coded still takes roughly half the storage of a JPEG of similar quality. An iPhone photo is not one big HEVC frame: it is a grid of 512 by 512 pixel tiles that the decoder stitches back together.

The catch is licensing. HEVC is covered by patents managed by several pools, so browsers other than Safari do not ship a decoder, and Windows needs the HEIF Image Extensions plus a separate HEVC codec from the Microsoft Store before it can show a HEIC thumbnail. JPEG, from 1992, has no such barrier, which is why converting is still the simplest way to share an iPhone photo with everyone.

A HEIF file can hold more than one picture. Most iPhone photos have a single main image plus auxiliary data such as a depth map for Portrait mode or an HDR gain map. This converter outputs every top-level image in the file, numbered -1, -2 and so on when there is more than one. Auxiliary images are not exported. A Live Photo is a HEIC still plus a separate .MOV video, so only the still is in the file you drop here, and burst shots are saved by iOS as separate photos.

Common use cases

  • Sharing with Windows and Android users

Send photos that open everywhere without asking the recipient to install codecs.

  • Uploading to web forms

Many job portals, government sites and shop back ends reject .heic files. Convert first and upload the JPG.

  • Editing in older software

Bring iPhone photos into image editors, office suites or print services that only read JPG or PNG.

  • Archiving a batch from a phone backup

Convert a folder of HEIC files copied off an iPhone and download them as one ZIP.

Tips and limitations

  • Converted files carry no EXIF metadata: date taken, camera model and GPS location are not copied. That is good for privacy but means photo apps may sort them by file date.
  • The colour profile is not embedded. iPhone photos are captured in Display P3, so very saturated reds and greens can look slightly muted after conversion.
  • Rotation and mirroring recorded inside the HEIF container are applied by the decoder, so portrait photos should come out upright. Check the preview before deleting originals.
  • A JPG is often 1.5 to 2 times the size of the HEIC. Lower the quality to 80% if size matters more than fine detail.
  • If a file fails to decode in Chrome or Firefox, try Safari 17 or later, which has its own HEIC decoder that this tool uses as a fallback.
  • To stop the iPhone creating HEIC at all, set Settings > Camera > Formats to Most Compatible.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open a HEIC file on Windows?

Windows needs two Microsoft Store add-ons: HEIF Image Extensions and an HEVC video codec. If you cannot or do not want to install them, convert the photo to JPG here and open the JPG instead.

Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?

A little, because JPG is lossy too. At 90% quality the difference is hard to see at normal viewing size. If you need an exact copy of the decoded pixels for editing, choose PNG, which is lossless but much larger.

Why is the JPG bigger than the original HEIC?

HEVC compresses about twice as well as JPEG, so the same picture at similar quality needs more bytes as a JPG. Lowering the quality slider shrinks the file; 80% is usually still clean for sharing.

Are my HEIC photos uploaded to a server?

No. The libheif decoder is downloaded once as part of this page and then runs in your browser. Photos are read from your disk, converted in memory and saved back to your downloads folder.

What happens to Live Photos and burst shots?

The motion part of a Live Photo is a separate .MOV file, so converting the HEIC gives you the still frame only. iOS saves each burst frame as its own photo. If one HEIF file does hold several top-level images, each one is exported as a numbered JPG.

Is the location and date kept when I convert HEIC to JPG?

No. The image is decoded to pixels and encoded fresh, and EXIF metadata such as GPS coordinates, date taken and camera model is not carried over. Keep the original if you need that data.

Why does a HEIC file fail to convert?

The decoder may not support a feature used in that file, the file may be damaged, or it may not be HEIC at all. The error message names the file. Safari 17 and later can often open such files with their built-in decoder, which this tool tries automatically.

How do I make my iPhone save photos as JPG instead of HEIC?

Open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPEG. Under Settings, Photos, Transfer to Mac or PC, the Automatic option also converts photos to JPEG when you copy them to a computer.
