Photo Collage Maker
Arrange 2 to 64 photos in grids or feature layouts, set the gap, border, rounding and background, and save a high-resolution collage for print or social media.
The interactive tool loads here when JavaScript runs.
About this toolWhat is the Photo Collage Maker?
Add your photos, pick a layout and the collage is built immediately: two side by side, two stacked, one large with two or three smaller, two over three, 2 x 2, 3 x 2, 3 x 3 or a custom grid of up to 8 x 8. Photos fill the spaces in list order, and you can move them up and down, shuffle them or remove them.
Choose the shape of the whole collage (square, 4:5, 9:16, 16:9, 3:2 or A-series paper) and its width in pixels, then set the gap between photos, the outer border, the corner rounding and the background colour. Each photo either fills its cell, cropped around the centre, or is shown whole with the background around it.
The collage is assembled on a canvas in your browser at full resolution, up to 8000 pixels wide. No photos are uploaded and the downloaded file contains no metadata from the originals.
- Ten preset layouts plus custom grids up to 8 x 8
- Square, social, widescreen, 3:2 print and A-series shapes
- Exact pixel gaps, outer border, rounded corners and background colour
- Fill or fit per collage, reorder and shuffle photos
- Output up to 8000 px wide as JPEG, PNG or WebP
- Runs in your browser; no upload and no watermark
How to use the Photo Collage Maker
- Choose your photos or drop them on the box. Four sample photos are shown until you do.
- Pick a layout, or Custom grid and enter columns and rows.
- Choose the shape and width of the collage. 2048 px is a good default for social media; use 2480 px wide A-series portrait for an A4 print at 300 ppi.
- Set the gap, outer border, corner rounding, background colour and whether photos fill their cells or show whole.
- Reorder photos with the arrows, then choose JPEG, PNG or WebP and download the collage.
Worked examples
Instagram 2 x 2
Input
1:1, 2048 px, 2 x 2 grid, 16 px gap, 16 px border
Output
Four 1000 x 1000 cells on a 2048 x 2048 canvas
(2048 - 2 x 16 - 16) / 2 = 1000 px per cell.
Before and after
Input
2 side by side, 16:9, 1920 px, 0 gap, 0 border
Output
Two 960 x 1080 halves
With no gap and no border the halves meet exactly in the middle, useful for comparison shots.
A4 print of nine photos
Input
A-series portrait, 2480 px, 3 x 3 grid, 24 px gap, 60 px border
Output
2480 x 3507 px canvas, cells about 771 x 1113 px
At 300 ppi that prints at A4 size with a white border and narrow white lines between photos.
Background and insight
A collage layout is a grid of tracks. With a width W, an outer border b, n columns and a gap g, each column is (W - 2b - (n - 1)g) / n pixels wide; a cell that spans several columns adds the gaps it covers. The tool rounds track edges once, so every gap is exactly the number of pixels you set and cells meet without one-pixel seams. A 2048 px square 2 x 2 collage with 16 px gaps and a 16 px border has cells of 1000 x 1000 px.
Photos rarely match the shape of their cell. Fill cell works like CSS object-fit: cover. The photo is scaled until it covers the cell and the overflow is cropped equally from both sides, so a 4000 x 3000 landscape in a square cell keeps its central 3000 x 3000. Whole photo works like object-fit: contain and leaves bands of background colour instead of cropping.
For print, pixels per inch decide sharpness. 300 ppi is the common target for photo prints viewed up close, so a 6 x 4 inch print needs 1800 x 1200 pixels and an A4 page (210 x 297 mm, ISO 216) needs about 2480 x 3508. For screens, match the platform: Instagram shows posts 1080 pixels wide, so a 2048 px collage will be scaled down and stay sharp.
Common use cases
Social media posts
Combine several holiday, event or product photos into one square or 4:5 post.
Before and after comparisons
Put two renovation, design or editing versions side by side without a gap.
Prints and cards
Lay out a 6 x 4 print, an A4 page or a greeting card with a clean border.
Mood boards and reports
Group reference images or site photos into one image for a slide or document.
Tips and limitations
- Put the strongest photo in the large cell of a feature layout; viewers look there first.
- Use Fill cell for a tidy grid and Whole photo when nothing may be cropped, such as documents or artwork.
- Keep gaps between 0.5% and 2% of the width; very wide gaps make the photos feel disconnected.
- Mix portrait and landscape photos carefully. In Fill cell mode a tall photo in a wide cell loses its top and bottom.
- If photos do not appear, the layout has fewer spaces than photos; extra photos are listed faded and not drawn.
- Very large collages (several thousand pixels each way) may be slow on phones because the whole canvas is held in memory.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a photo collage for Instagram?
Choose 1:1 square or 4:5 portrait, a width of 2048 px, a layout such as 2 x 2, and download as JPEG. Instagram scales it to 1080 px wide.
How many pixels do I need to print a collage?
Multiply the print size in inches by about 300. A 6 x 4 inch print needs 1800 x 1200 px; an A4 page needs about 2480 x 3508 px.
What is the difference between Fill cell and Whole photo?
Fill cell scales each photo to cover its space and crops the overflow from the centre. Whole photo scales it to fit inside the space and shows the background around it.
Can I add a white border between photos?
Yes. Set the gap for the lines between photos, the outer border for the edge, and choose white (or any colour) as the background.
How do I change which photo goes in the big space?
Photos fill spaces in list order, and the large space is first in feature layouts. Move the photo to the top of the list with the arrow buttons.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The collage is drawn by your browser and downloaded from your device. Nothing is sent to a server.
Is there an in-depth guide to the Photo Collage Maker?
Yes. “Photo Collage Layouts: Grids, Gaps and Print Sizes That Work” covers the background, how it works, common pitfalls and worked examples. Read the full guide.
