Audio and Video Converters
These tools change video and audio files without uploading them. The Video Converter rewraps or re-encodes a file into MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI and older formats, with presets for phones, tablets and consoles. The Video Compressor brings a recording under an email or chat limit by aiming for a file size or a quality level. MP4 to MP3 keeps only the soundtrack, and Video to GIF cuts a few seconds into an animation for a README, a ticket or a slide.

Which tool do I need?
Play an iPhone MOV or a WebM recording on any device
Convert it to MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, the combination almost every phone, TV and editor accepts.
Get a screen recording under an upload limit
Enter the size you need, such as 25 MB, and the compressor works out the bitrate from the video length.
Save the audio from a lecture or music video
Extract the soundtrack as MP3 for any player, or as M4A or WAV when you want to edit it.
Turn a short clip into a GIF for a bug report or README
Pick the start and end, lower the frame rate and width, and preview the GIF size before you download it.
About Audio & Video
All four run ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. The engine is about 31 MB and is downloaded from a public CDN the first time you convert something, then cached by the browser. Your video is read from your disk into the page and never sent anywhere. For audio-only files, the Audio Format Converter in Text & Speech Tools uses the same engine to write MP3, AAC, FLAC, Opus and other formats.
Expect desktop-class results at a slower pace. A browser runs ffmpeg on a single thread, so re-encoding a long 1080p video takes several times longer than a native app, and very large files can run out of memory in the tab. Changing only the container (MOV to MP4 with H.264 inside, for example) is fast because nothing is re-encoded. Trim before you convert when you only need part of a recording.

Frequently asked questions
Do the video tools upload my files to a server?
No. The ffmpeg engine is downloaded once from a CDN, but your video is processed inside the browser tab and the result is saved straight to your device.
Why is converting a video in the browser slower than a desktop app?
The WebAssembly build of ffmpeg runs on one CPU thread and cannot use your graphics card, while desktop encoders use every core and often hardware encoding. Short clips are quick; long HD videos take a while.
How large a video can I convert online here?
It depends on the memory your browser gives the tab. Files of a few hundred megabytes usually work on a laptop; multi-gigabyte files often fail, so trim or split them first.
What is the difference between converting and compressing a video?
Converting changes the file format, sometimes without touching the picture. Compressing re-encodes the picture at a lower bitrate so the file gets smaller, which always costs some quality.
Which format should I pick when I am not sure?
MP4 with H.264 and AAC. It plays in every browser, on phones and smart TVs, and uploads to every social and chat service.
