About this tool

What is the PDF to JPG Converter?

The PDF to JPG Converter renders each page of a PDF into an image file. Choose JPG or PNG, pick a resolution from 72 DPI for quick previews up to 600 DPI for archival copies, and limit the job to the pages you need with a range such as 1-3, 7, 10-. Every page appears as a thumbnail with its pixel size and file size, and you can save pages one at a time or all of them in a single ZIP.

It is also the PDF to PNG converter on this site: switch the format to PNG and the same pages come out lossless, which keeps thin lines and small type perfectly sharp. JPG gives much smaller files for scanned pages and photo-heavy brochures.

The PDF is opened by pdf.js, the renderer built into Firefox, running inside your browser tab. The file is not uploaded. Password-protected PDFs are supported: enter the password and it is used locally to decrypt the document.

  • JPG or PNG output from the same page
  • Resolution from 72 to 600 DPI with the exact pixel size shown
  • Page ranges such as 1-3, 7, 10-
  • Password-protected PDFs unlocked locally
  • Thumbnails, single-page downloads and one ZIP for everything
  • Rendering happens in your browser; the PDF is not uploaded

How to use the PDF to JPG Converter

  1. Drop a PDF onto the upload area or click Choose PDF. The file name, page count and size of page 1 appear once it opens.
  2. If the PDF asks for a password, type it into the box that appears and click Unlock.
  3. Choose JPG or PNG, a resolution, and for JPG a quality. The pixel size of page 1 updates as you change the DPI.
  4. Optionally type a page selection such as 2-5, 9 or 8- (page 8 to the end). Leave it empty to convert every page.
  5. Click Convert. Thumbnails fill in as each page finishes; click Stop to end early and keep what is done.
  6. Download single pages with the button under each thumbnail, or click Download all (ZIP) to get every image in one archive.

Worked examples

A 12-page Letter report at 150 DPI

Input

report.pdf, 12 pages, JPG, quality 90%, Pages left empty

Output

12 images of 1275 × 1650 px named report-page-01.jpg to report-page-12.jpg, plus report-jpg.zip

Page numbers are zero-padded to the width of the page count, so the files sort in page order in Finder, Explorer and on the command line. The ZIP stores the images without recompressing them, because JPG and PNG data is already compressed.

Just the signature page, as a sharp PNG

Input

contract.pdf, Pages: 14, PNG, 300 DPI

Output

contract-page-14.png at 2550 × 3300 px

PNG keeps the hairlines of a signature and small legal type crisp. At 300 DPI the image prints at the original size with no softening.

Background and insight

A PDF page has no pixel size. Its dimensions are stored in points, 1/72 of an inch, so a US Letter page is 612 × 792 points and an A4 page is about 595 × 842. Text is stored as glyph outlines and vector paths, which is why a PDF stays sharp at any zoom. Turning a page into an image means choosing a resolution: at 150 DPI a Letter page becomes 1275 × 1650 pixels, at 300 DPI it becomes 2550 × 3300. The converter shows the exact result for your first page before you start.

Higher DPI is not free. Doubling the DPI quadruples the pixel count, and so roughly quadruples memory and file size. Browsers also cap a single canvas at around 16.7 million pixels (the Safari and iOS limit), so a Letter page at 600 DPI, which would be 33.7 megapixels, is rendered at the highest scale that fits and the tool tells you when that happened.

Format choice follows the content. PNG uses lossless DEFLATE compression and suits text, charts and line art, where JPEG ringing around letter edges is easy to see. JPEG suits scanned pages and photographs, where it is often five to ten times smaller at a quality of 85 to 90 with no visible loss. Transparent areas are filled with white in both formats, matching how the page looks in a PDF viewer.

Common use cases

  • Slides and documents

Drop a page from a PDF into PowerPoint, Keynote, Google Slides or a wiki that only accepts images.

  • Sharing a single page

Send one page of a long PDF as an image in chat apps that preview pictures but not documents.

  • Thumbnails and previews

Make cover images for a download page, a store listing or a document library at 72 to 96 DPI.

  • Feeding image-only tools

Prepare scanned pages for OCR, image editors, annotation tools or machine learning datasets that expect PNG or JPG.

  • Archiving forms and receipts

Keep a 300 DPI PNG of a signed form or receipt alongside the original PDF.

Tips and limitations

  • 150 DPI is a good default for reading on screen. Use 300 DPI for printing or OCR, and 72 to 96 DPI for thumbnails.
  • For pages that are mostly text or diagrams, PNG is often both sharper and not much larger than JPG. For scans and photos, JPG at 85 to 90 is usually best.
  • Very large pages (posters, engineering drawings) can hit the browser canvas limit at high DPI; the tool lowers the scale to fit and warns you.
  • Converting hundreds of pages at 300 DPI keeps every image in memory until you leave the page. Convert in batches with page ranges if the tab slows down.
  • Images are flattened: text in them is no longer selectable or searchable. Keep the PDF if you need that, or run the images through OCR.
  • Fonts that the PDF does not embed are fetched from the pdf.js font set on jsDelivr when needed, so a rare PDF may need a network connection to render correctly. Your PDF itself is never sent.

Frequently asked questions

What DPI should I use to convert a PDF to JPG?

Use 150 DPI for on-screen reading and sharing, 300 DPI for printing or OCR, and 72 to 96 DPI for small previews. A US Letter page is 1275 × 1650 pixels at 150 DPI and 2550 × 3300 at 300 DPI. Every doubling of DPI makes the file roughly four times larger.

How do I convert a PDF to PNG instead of JPG?

Set Image format to PNG before clicking Convert. PNG is lossless, so text edges and thin lines stay exact, which makes it the better choice for documents, charts and screenshots. Files are larger than JPG for scanned or photographic pages.

Can I convert only some pages of a PDF to images?

Yes. Type a selection into Pages, for example 3 for one page, 2-5 for a run, 1, 4, 9 for a list, or 8- for page 8 to the end. Leave it empty to convert every page. Each file name carries its original page number.

Does it work with password-protected PDFs?

Yes, if you know the password. When a PDF needs one to open, a password box appears; the password is passed to pdf.js in your tab to decrypt the file and is not stored or sent anywhere. PDFs with only an owner password (printing or copying restrictions) open without asking.

Why does my PDF page look blurry as a JPG?

The resolution was too low for the size you are viewing it at, or the page itself contains a low-resolution scan. Raise the DPI to 200 or 300, or switch to PNG for text-heavy pages. A scanned page cannot gain detail that the scanner never captured.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server when I convert it to images?

No. The PDF is read and rendered by pdf.js inside your browser, and the images are created on your device. The page records anonymous usage events such as a conversion count, never the file, its text or its name.

Why is the text in the converted image not selectable?

An image stores pixels, not characters. The text layer of the PDF is lost when a page becomes a JPG or PNG. Keep the original PDF for searching, or run the image through an OCR tool to get the text back.

Is there an in-depth guide to the PDF to JPG Converter?
