PDF to Word Converter
Extract the text of a PDF into an editable Word DOCX with headings, paragraphs and lists rebuilt. Runs in your browser; keeps words and structure, not layout.
The interactive tool loads here when JavaScript runs.
About this toolWhat is the PDF to Word Converter?
The PDF to Word Converter reads the text layer of a PDF and writes it into a .docx file you can edit in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice or Pages. Lines that wrap are joined back into paragraphs, larger type becomes Word headings (Heading 1 to 3), bullet points become a real Word bulleted list, and numbered items keep their numbers. You see a plain-text preview of the result before you download.
Be clear about what this is: a text-and-structure converter, not a layout copier. Fonts, colours, columns, table grids and the exact position of each element are not reproduced. If you also want to see the original page, tick the option to add a picture of each page after its text, so the DOCX contains both the editable words and a visual reference.
Scanned PDFs are a special case. A page that came from a scanner or phone camera is a picture with no text layer, so there is nothing to extract. The tool detects those pages and points you to the Image to Text (OCR) tool. The whole conversion runs in your browser and the PDF is not uploaded.
- Editable DOCX that opens in Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages
- Headings, paragraphs, bullet and numbered lists rebuilt from the PDF
- Hyphenated words at line ends rejoined
- Detects scanned pages with no text layer and points to OCR
- Optional picture of each page for reference
- Runs in your browser; password PDFs unlocked locally
How to use the PDF to Word Converter
- Drop a PDF onto the upload area or click Choose PDF. If it is password protected, enter the password and click Unlock.
- Wait a moment while the text of every page is read. The preview shows the detected headings (marked with #), paragraphs and lists.
- If a warning says some pages have no text layer, those pages are scans; run them through the Image to Text (OCR) tool to get their text.
- Choose whether each PDF page should start on a new Word page and whether to add a picture of each page after its text.
- Click Download DOCX. The file is named after the PDF, for example report.pdf becomes report.docx.
Worked examples
A report exported from Google Docs
Input
A 3-page PDF with a 24 pt title, 16 pt section names, 11 pt body text and a bulleted list
Output
Title as Heading 1, sections as Heading 2, wrapped body lines joined into paragraphs, bullets as a Word list
The 11 pt size covers the most characters, so it is the body. The two larger sizes become heading levels in order of size. Because the DOCX uses Word's built-in heading styles, the Navigation pane and an automatic table of contents work straight away.
A scanned contract
Input
A 5-page PDF produced by an office scanner
Output
Warning: this PDF has no text layer, with a link to the OCR tool
Each page is a single image, so pdf.js finds no characters. OCR has to recognise the letters from the pixels first; after that, the text can be pasted into Word.
Background and insight
PDF was designed to print the same everywhere, not to be edited. Inside a page, text is stored as a series of drawing commands: select a font and size, move to a coordinate, show these glyphs. There is no paragraph object and often not even a space character between words; viewers infer spaces from the gaps. Tagged PDF (the accessibility structure in ISO 32000) can carry headings and reading order, but most PDFs in the wild either lack tags or carry incomplete ones.
So every PDF to Word converter reconstructs structure from geometry. This one takes the positioned text runs that pdf.js extracts, groups runs that share a baseline into lines, then joins lines into paragraphs when the spacing between baselines matches the normal line spacing of the page. A gap noticeably larger than usual, a change of font size, or a line that starts with a bullet or a number such as 1. or a) starts a new block. The most common font size in the document is treated as body text; sizes at least 15% larger become headings, the largest being Heading 1. Words hyphenated across a line break, like infor- / mation, are rejoined.
Commercial converters go further by guessing tables from ruling lines and recreating text boxes at absolute positions. That keeps the look but produces documents that are painful to edit, because every line ends up in its own frame. A flowing DOCX with real headings is usually what people want when they say they need to edit a PDF.
Common use cases
Editing an old document
Recover the text of a report or CV when only the PDF survives and the original Word file is lost.
Reusing content
Pull sections of a whitepaper, policy or manual into a new document without retyping or fixing broken line breaks by hand.
Tracked changes and comments
Get a PDF contract or draft into Word so reviewers can use Track Changes instead of annotating a PDF.
Translation and proofreading
Hand a translator or proofreader a DOCX with clean paragraphs, which CAT tools and spell checkers handle far better than PDF.
Tips and limitations
- Text-based PDFs exported from Word, Google Docs, LaTeX or a browser convert best. Designed layouts from InDesign with many text boxes convert less cleanly.
- Two-column layouts usually come out in the right order because most PDFs draw one column after the other, but some generators interleave columns line by line; check the preview.
- Tables become one paragraph per row or cell, in reading order, without the grid. Rebuild tables in Word with Convert Text to Table if needed.
- Running headers, footers and page numbers are part of the page text, so they appear as short paragraphs on every page. Delete them after converting.
- Bold, italics and font names are not carried over. Headings are detected from size only, so a bold line at body size stays a paragraph.
- Adding page pictures makes the DOCX much larger: roughly 100 to 300 KB per page.
Frequently asked questions
Will the Word file look exactly like my PDF?
No, and no converter that produces an editable flowing document can promise that. This tool keeps the words, reading order, headings, paragraphs and lists. Fonts, colours, columns, table grids and exact positions are not copied. Tick the page picture option if you need the original look alongside the text.
Why is my converted Word document empty?
The PDF is almost certainly a scan: each page is a picture of text, with no characters stored in it. The tool warns you when it finds pages like this. Use the Image to Text (OCR) tool to recognise the text, then paste it into Word.
How are headings detected when converting a PDF to DOCX?
By font size. The size that covers the most text is the body size, and lines at least 15% larger become headings, with the largest size mapped to Heading 1, the next to Heading 2 and the rest to Heading 3. Short blocks only: a long paragraph in large type stays a paragraph.
Can I convert a password-protected PDF to Word?
Yes, if you know the password that opens it. Type it into the password box and the file is decrypted in your browser. The password is not saved or sent anywhere.
Does it convert tables in the PDF into Word tables?
No. A PDF table is just text placed in a grid, often with lines drawn separately. The text comes through in reading order, one row or cell per line, without the grid. In Word you can select the rows and use Insert, Table, Convert Text to Table.
Is the PDF uploaded when I convert it to Word?
No. pdf.js reads the PDF and the docx library writes the Word file, both inside your browser tab. Only anonymous usage events such as a conversion count are recorded, never the document or its contents.
Which apps can open the DOCX it creates?
Any app that reads Office Open XML: Microsoft Word 2007 and later, Word for the web, Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer and Apple Pages. Headings use the standard Heading 1 to 3 styles, so outlines and tables of contents work in all of them.
Is there an in-depth guide to the PDF to Word Converter?
Yes. “PDF to Image and PDF to Word: What Survives the Conversion” covers the background, how it works, common pitfalls and worked examples. Read the full guide.
