Merge PDF Files
Combine several PDFs into one file in the order you choose, taking all pages or a range from each. Runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
The interactive tool loads here when JavaScript runs.
About this toolWhat is Merge PDF?
Merge PDF joins two or more PDF files into a single document. Add the files, put them in the order you want with the up and down arrows (or sort them by file name), optionally type a page range for any file, and download one combined PDF.
Each page is copied as it is: text stays selectable, images keep their original resolution, and a landscape page or an A4 page among Letter pages keeps its own size and orientation. Nothing is re-rendered or recompressed, so the merged file looks exactly like the originals.
The files never leave your computer. The merge is done by the pdf-lib library in the browser tab, which matters for contracts, payslips, medical letters and anything else you would rather not hand to an upload site.
- Any number of PDFs, merged in the order you set
- Optional page range per file, such as 1-3, 5, 8-
- Numeric-aware sort by file name
- Keeps text, image quality, page sizes and rotation
- Clear error for encrypted or damaged files
- Runs entirely in your browser: the PDF is read, edited and saved on your device and is never uploaded to a server.
How to use Merge PDF
- Click the drop area or drag PDF files onto it. You can add more files at any time, or try the tool with two sample PDFs.
- Arrange the list from top to bottom in the order the pages should appear. Use the arrows, or Sort by file name for numbered files such as scan-1, scan-2 and scan-10.
- To take only part of a file, type a range in its box, for example 1-3, 5 or 8- (page 8 to the end). Leave it empty for every page.
- Check the page count, edit the output file name if you like, and click Merge.
- Download the combined PDF.
Worked examples
Report plus appendix
Input
report.pdf (12 pages), appendix.pdf (4 pages), all pages
Output
report_merged.pdf with 16 pages
Pages keep their order inside each file; the appendix follows the report because it is second in the list.
Cover page from one file, body from another
Input
cover.pdf range "1", draft.pdf range "2-"
Output
The new cover followed by the draft without its old cover
A range per file replaces a separate split step when you only need to swap a page.
Sorting numbered scans
Input
scan-1.pdf, scan-10.pdf, scan-2.pdf, then Sort by file name
Output
scan-1, scan-2, scan-10
The sort is numeric-aware, so 10 comes after 2 instead of after 1.
Background and insight
A PDF is a collection of numbered objects: pages, fonts, images and content streams, tied together by a page tree that lists the pages in order (ISO 32000-1, section 7.7.3). Merging means copying each chosen page object, and every object it refers to, from the source files into a new document and appending it to the new page tree. Shared resources such as a font used on every page are copied once per source file.
What a page refers to is carried along; what the document as a whole holds is not. Bookmarks (the outline), the interactive form dictionary, document-level JavaScript and links that jump to another page are stored outside the pages, so a page-copying merge drops them. Comments and web links live on the page as annotations and survive. Form fields may still show their filled-in values but can stop being editable, so complete and flatten forms before merging when possible.
Password-protected or permission-restricted PDFs are encrypted and cannot be copied without decrypting them first. The tool tells you which file is encrypted instead of producing a broken result.
Common use cases
Expense claims
Put receipts, invoices and the claim form into one PDF the finance system accepts.
Job and visa applications
Combine a CV, cover letter, certificates and passport scans into the single upload a portal asks for.
Reports and theses
Assemble chapters exported separately from Word, LaTeX or a slide tool into one document.
Scanned paperwork
Join several scanning sessions of the same contract or medical record into one file.
Tips and limitations
- Bookmarks, internal page links and fillable form fields are not kept. Add bookmarks afterwards in a PDF editor if the document needs them.
- Encrypted PDFs must be unlocked first: open them with the password in a reader and print or save a copy as PDF.
- The merged file is about the size of the inputs added together. If it is too large to email, run it through Compress PDF.
- Pages keep their own size. To put everything on one paper size, print the merged file with "fit to page" or recreate it from images.
- Very large merges (hundreds of megabytes) are limited by the memory of your browser tab; merge in batches if a tab runs out.
Frequently asked questions
Does merging PDFs reduce the quality?
No. Pages are copied as PDF objects, not rendered to images, so text stays sharp and selectable and images keep their original pixels and compression.
Why are my bookmarks missing after merging?
Bookmarks are stored at document level, not on the pages, and this tool copies pages. Links to web addresses and comments are kept because they belong to the page.
Can I merge only some pages of each PDF?
Yes. Type a range in the box next to a file, for example 2-5 or 1, 3, 7-. Leave it empty to take every page.
Is there a limit on the number of PDFs I can merge?
There is no fixed limit. The practical limit is your device memory, because every file is held in the browser tab while it is merged.
Can I merge a password-protected PDF?
Not directly. Encrypted files cannot be copied page by page, so open the file with its password, save or print it to a new PDF, and merge that copy.
Are my files uploaded when I merge them?
No. The files are read and combined by JavaScript in this browser tab and the result is downloaded straight to your device.
Is there an in-depth guide to Merge PDF?
Yes. “How to Merge PDF Files Without Losing Pages or Quality” covers the background, how it works, common pitfalls and worked examples. Read the full guide.
