About this tool

What is Rotate PDF?

Rotate PDF Pages turns pages by 90, 180 or 270 degrees and saves the change in the file, so every reader, printer and upload portal shows them the right way up. Rotate every page at once, select odd pages, even pages, landscape or portrait pages, type a range, or click individual thumbnails.

The thumbnails show the new orientation before you save, and each page shows how far it has been turned. Only the rotation entry of each page changes: text stays selectable, and bookmarks, links, form fields and metadata are kept because the file is edited in place rather than rebuilt.

Everything happens in your browser. The PDF is opened and saved locally and is never uploaded.

  • Rotate by 90° right, 90° left or 180°
  • Select all, odd, even, landscape, portrait, a range or single pages
  • Live thumbnails with the final rotation of each page
  • Edits the file in place, keeping bookmarks, links, forms and metadata
  • Lossless: page content is not re-rendered
  • Runs entirely in your browser: the PDF is read, edited and saved on your device and is never uploaded to a server.

How to use Rotate PDF

  1. Drop a PDF onto the page or try the sample.
  2. With no pages selected, the buttons rotate every page. To limit them, click thumbnails, use Odd, Even, Landscape or Portrait, or type a range and click Select.
  3. Click 90° right, 90° left or 180°. Each page also has its own small rotate buttons.
  4. Check the thumbnails; Reset clears all changes.
  5. Click Save and download the rotated PDF.

Worked examples

One sideways chart

Input

20-page report, page 7 is a landscape chart that appears sideways

Output

Page 7 rotated 90° left, saved with /Rotate 270

Only that page changes; the rest keep their orientation.

Duplex scan with upside-down backs

Input

Select Even, then 180°

Output

Pages 2, 4, 6 and so on turned the right way up

Common when the scanner flips the sheet the other way for the reverse side.

Page that already has a rotation

Input

Page stored with /Rotate 90, then 90° right

Output

Saved with /Rotate 180

Rotations add up modulo 360, matching what you see in the thumbnail.

Background and insight

Every PDF page can carry a /Rotate entry that tells viewers to turn the page clockwise by a multiple of 90 degrees when displaying or printing it (ISO 32000-1, section 7.7.3.3, Table 30). The page content itself is not redrawn. That is why rotation in this tool is instant and lossless, and why it only offers 90 degree steps: arbitrary angles would need the page content to be transformed.

Rotating with the buttons in a PDF reader usually changes only the current view, which is why a document fixed in the viewer opens sideways again later. Saving a new /Rotate value fixes it for everyone. Scanners and phone scanning apps often write the orientation of the paper as it went through the feeder, so double-sided documents can come out with every other page upside down; rotating even pages by 180 degrees fixes that in one step.

Rotation adds to what a page already has. A page stored with /Rotate 90 that you turn another 90 degrees right ends up at 180. The small figure under each thumbnail shows the final value written to the file.

Common use cases

  • Fixing phone and office scans

Turn pages that were fed or photographed the wrong way before sending them on.

  • Mixed orientation reports

Make wide tables and charts read correctly in a portrait document.

  • Preparing for print

Make sure pages print the right way round on printers that follow the file orientation.

  • Upload portals

Fix sideways ID or certificate scans that a reviewer would otherwise have to turn.

Tips and limitations

  • Rotation is stored per page, so different pages can face different ways in one file.
  • Only 90 degree steps are possible without redrawing the page. For a slightly skewed scan, rescan or use an editor that deskews images.
  • If you also need to reorder or delete pages, use Organize PDF Pages, which can rotate as well.
  • Some viewers remember a per-file view rotation. If a saved file still looks wrong, close and reopen it.
  • Encrypted PDFs cannot be modified here; save an unprotected copy first.

Frequently asked questions

How do I rotate a PDF and save it so it stays rotated?

Rotate the pages here and download the saved file. The rotation is written into each page of the PDF, so it no longer depends on a viewer setting.

Can I rotate just one page of a PDF?

Yes. Use the small rotate buttons under that page, or click it to select it and use the main buttons. Other pages stay as they are.

Does rotating a PDF reduce quality?

No. Only a number on each page changes; the text, images and drawings are not touched or re-rendered.

Why can I only rotate in 90 degree steps?

The PDF standard stores page rotation as a multiple of 90 degrees. Other angles would require redrawing the page content, which changes the file far more.

Will the bookmarks and links in my PDF still work?

Yes. The file is edited in place rather than rebuilt, so bookmarks, links, form fields and metadata are kept.

Is there an in-depth guide to Rotate PDF?

Yes. “Rotate PDF Pages Permanently: How /Rotate Works and Why Views Reset” covers the background, how it works, common pitfalls and worked examples. Read the full guide.
